Favorite Wedding Movies: Our Valentine’s Binge List

 February 9, 2017

No date for Valentine’s? Or traumatised by the Feb. 14 traffic scene from years past?  We’ve got you covered! Read on for our list of favorite wedding movies to binge on!

We’re not ashamed to admit that we love a good romantic comedy.  Sure they may have fed our unrealistic fantasies about our own happy-ever-afters. Since then, we’ve aged and have finally come to accept that life is more complicated and not always as cute as a Joyce Bernal or Nora Ephron movie. But who says we’re not allowed to daydream about our love lives turning into a RomCom? Who?!? Let us share with you a few of the best and most over-played scenes in our heads from some of our favorite wedding movies.

When he knows you better than you do yourself…

1. Runaway Bride

We can think of a number of things worse than getting dumped at the altar (such as Typhoon Haiyan or the Syrian war).  That said, we still wouldn’t wish this upon anyone, not even our worst enemies.  But Runaway Bride is definitely one of our favorite wedding movies because it allowed us to sympathize with real-life individuals who got more than just cold feet before walking down the aisle. Besides, how can you not love a proposal done just right?

Look, I guarantee there’ll be tough times. I guarantee that at some point, one or both of us is gonna want to get out of this thing. But I also guarantee that if I don’t ask you to be mine, I’ll regret it for the rest of my life, because I know, in my heart, you’re the only one for me.

So ladies (and gentlemen), don’t ever underestimate the importance of knowing yourself! There’s no need to hide our personality and preferences to please someone else.  This wasn’t in the movie but allow us to quote James Baldwin: “Love takes off masks that we fear we cannot live without and know we cannot live within.”  Spot on, man.

2. My Big Fat Greek Wedding

From clashing cultures and meeting the potential dream guy, all the way to the wedding planning, here’s one movie that never fails to give us a fun-sized dose of reality.  Toula, a 30-year old single girl is trapped within her family’s traditions and expectations. Read: her family basically controls her life.  Who wouldn’t be invested when she finally, finally follows her dreams?

“Don’t let your past dictate who you are, but let it be part of who you will become.”

This is one of our favorite wedding movies because it reminds us how important it is to speak up and fight for what we believe in. When it feels like we have to go against all odds, let’s take our cue from Toula. Yes she loved her family, as we do too, but she also thought of her own happiness and bravely pursued her dreams. The bonus? That was how she met the man she would eventually marry.

3. Sweet Home Alabama

Ah, yes. Soulmates—are they real or myth? In a way, one of our favorite wedding movies is about that.  Early on in the film, we find out that two beautiful people who fell in love with each other at the age of ten have separated and are now worlds apart. She’s trying to move on, while he can’t admit how much he still loves her. *sigh*

“Your daddy… I was a fool for that man. I couldn’t even put one foot in front of the other. I just kept thinking, ‘Oh, preacher, hurry up before he changes his mind!’ Now that man makes me so crazy sometimes I could wring his neck! [You still love him, though.]  God knows I do. And only He knows why.”

Sometimes, we can’t get it right the first time around.  But what’s clear to us in this movie is that you decide who your soulmate is—and he/she only becomes that person when you commit yourself fully to him/her.  Don’t wait for signs to tell you what your heart already knows!

Hands down our fave moment from the movie.

4. 27 Dresses

Everybody loves an underdog (except for President Snow but ignore this if you don’t get the reference. We’re just geeks like that). And no one is a bigger underdog than Katherine Heigl’s Jane in one of our favorite wedding movies. She’s not only “always the bridesmaid, never the bride”, but she’s literally too nice that she lets other people walk all over her.

And then there’s the other underdog, the cynical Kevin Doyle. Who among us dream of marrying Sarcasm himself?  No one.  But not only did these two opposites click, they also unknowingly helped the other change for the better because they were themselves around each other.  And isn’t that what love is about, finding the puzzle piece that fits in with yours?

“Do you wanna know the real reason why I came here tonight? Because I knew this was going to be hard for you. And for the first time in a really long time I wanted to be there for somebody. But I want you to know that I think you deserve more than what you’ve settled for. I do. I think you deserve to be taken care of for a change. I believe that.”

We know what you’re thinking: If only we could replicate our favourite wedding movies in real life! But life—and love—is not always a fairytale. More like a walk in the dangerously thorny forest courtesy of Maleficent.  But whether you are happily single or happily married or in-between, what matters is that you are happy. Binge on these movies! But don’t forget to go out there and make good choices—that’s what matters most. After all, nothing sets a soul on fire like being the person you were meant to be, right? Now go forth and slay! –written by Daphne Alina with Katrina Martin
